NEW----Pronunciation guide -- syllables and stressed syllables ( next to the last syllable or the last syllable for LZRD words)
Masculine and Feminine nouns, How to tell... (Feminine nouns mostly end in -a, -d, -z, or -ion. All else is masculine. But always learn the article (el, la) with a new noun to be sure) La casa, la pared, la paz, la leccion follow the rule. La clase is a weirdo! El lapiz is a weirdo, too.
Why be culturally competent? travelling or here at home.....
What's a cognate? COOLEST THING EVER: any word that ends in -TION in English is the same in Spanish. Just change the TION to CION and pronounce the vowels and consonants in Spanish. Transportation =transportacion, direction = direccion, nation=nacion. And these words are all FEMININE. So, are these words cognates?
HAY -- remember to use it in a question and in the answer, to0! Que hay en el pupitre? Hay dos libros y el lapiz.
What IS THERE on the desk? THERE ARE 2 books and the pencil.
9/5 &9/6
Question of the day: Can you use the Spanish word "hotel" to demonstrate what we learned yesterday about pronunciation in Spanish? and 2) What us the gender of "hotel"?
HANGMAN : VISITO MADRID. NECESITO UN HOTEL. ( I am visiting Madrid. I need a hotel.) Pronunciation/also INTUITIVE knowledge of UN -- use it with our nouns from last week. How about the FEMININE form? (el lapiz, the pencil; un lapiz, a pencil) (la casa, the house; una casa, a house)
We know some VERBS IN USE -- meaning we learned them as part of sentences or phrases. We know that verbs in a sentence contain not only the action but also the person doing the action.
Let's get some more legos to play with!
Introduction of verbs -- You can look in the book for "verb infinitives" and "present tense of verbs - -ar, -er, -ir " in chapters1A, 2 and 3.
Concept: In Spanish every new verb you learn will come from "verb Heaven" in the INFINITIVE FORM -- infinitive, infinity--- endless possibilities! But the infinitive form itself is kind of in suspended animation, neutral. It can only mean TO _________. It does NOT contain any information about anybody doing it. Nobody is doing it. It just IS. TO _______. To speak. To listen to. To ski. To write. To draw. To read. To swim, practice, dance, sing, run, play an instrument. To _______. To live, to use, to ride a horse, to ride a bike.
In Spanish all verb infinitives have- AR, -ER or- IR as their last two letters. The verbs above are: hablar, escuchar, esquiar, escribir, dibujar, leer, nadar, practicar, bailar, cantar, correr, tocar, vivir, usar, montar en caballo, montar en bicicleta.
You might also like to use the words: la computadora, musica, la guitarra, el piano, deportes to say "to listen to music (escuchar musica) or to use the computer (usar la computadora) or to play the piano (tocar el piano)
Now, we will learn the PRESENT TENSE in this first year of SPANISH. The BIG CONCEPT is that verbs in use in a sentence have to include the PERSON doing the action and that information is contained in a specific ENDING. The ending says WHO is doing the action and that it is happening NOW, in the PRESENT.
All possible do-ers of action can be "reduced" to this list:
I We
you (tu) (Familiar)
you (Usted) (polite) You-all ( ustedes )
he, she, it They
I draw these pronouns in a chart on the board. You will match the boxes up with the corresponding ending for AR ER or IR verbs.
AR ER IR
-o -amos -o -emos -o -imos
-as -es -es
-a -an -e -en -e -en
PROCEDURE: REMOVE INFINITIVE ENDING ( the -ar, -er or -ir)
Replace it with the ending that matches the person DOING the action.
EXAMPLE: I swim ---> think TO SWIM = NADAR ----> remover the -AR = NAD ----> put on the -o which is in the box corresponding with "I" = NADO. NADO means I swim or I am swimming. ?NADO? means Am I swimming?or DO I SWIM? ( remember that verbs in Spanish are the same, no matter that they are in a statement or a question? )
Graciela nada. = Graciela is swimming. Nadamos = We are swimming or We swim. get it? Now you try. Can you say
"I use the computer. " " We read." ( don't forget the match the AR, ER and IR endings. LEER is an ER verb so you'll use the -ER chart)
How about" Marco (he) lives". How about " Marco lives in Evergreen." Now play and practice!

here are 4 nouns for you to explore:
oportunidad, actividad, nacionalidad, variedad ----------------------------------how do you pronounce them? (review LZRD words!) Are they masculine or Feminine? (what's the rule?) What do you think they mean? Now notice the pattern between English and Spanish and propose a rule...... ( 1 cognates and 2 idad=ity) Add that to your other "extra vocabulary discoveries" - like that words in English that end in -tion end in -cion in Spanish and are cognates. And that -mente on the end of a Spanish word is like -ly in English.
Now remember back to our Hangman sentences and "necesito un hotel" . The "un" meant 'a', right. And we figured out that the feminine form would be 'una'. So instead of "THE opportunity" how would you say "AN opportunity"? Do that for all 4 nouns. YAY!
----QUIZ, 25 points over introductions and classroom vocabulary from the last 2 weeks.
----Use the new verbs that were introduced and use them to talk to others in class. You can begin with the intrdicutory things we've been using and then add things that you do. Maybe you'll have some things in common!! Also talk about what you mom or dad do or what you do with a friend, so you can practice using the HE SHE IT for amd the WE form too! You can ask your partner "DO YOU -------?" also. Practice practice!

lets work with our new verbs and see what else we might need...... maybe MUCHO?
PRACTICE NOW , using as many of the FORMS as you can. The use of NO to make things negative. Ask a question instead of making a statement.
We can use the DAYS of THE WEEK we are learning ------ say el lunes to express that you do something or are doing something on Monday. Use los lunes to express that you do something EVERY Monday ( on Mondays.....)

CAN YOU SAY " My family and I ride bikes alot in June and July." CAN YOU SAY " I ski with friends on Saturdays in January and February" WOW!
