Monday October 15
hand back quizzes ----- the three noun phrases on the quiz didn't count BUT will next time -- If you got a PP or a U pay close attention to the review of the lesson on adjectives:
LESSON:
Review SER, Review adjectives - agreement
Copy these 3 sentences in your notebook with lots of room to put circles and arrows and notes:
Cual es tu actividad favorita?
Que son tus clases favoritas?
Quien es tu profesor favorito?
In your notebook, circle THE MOST IMPORTANT word in the sentence ( the verb). Look at the question word that starts the sentence. Notate it in your notebook. Now look at "tu actividad favorita". You probably recognize "favorite"; hopefully you recognize Tu (your) and "actividad" activity. The most important word of that grouping of words is your NOUN. Because it ends in D it is feminine. ALL the words of the phrase have to agree with the noun. So make a note that ACTIVIDAD is a noun, feminine and singular. Tu is both masculine and feminine so it's cool. Favorit..... we want to put an A on the end because we want it , the adjective, to be in the feminine singular form -- favorita.
Next sentence, do the same process- verb, question word -- phrases -- see that tus clases favoritas are all plural? remember that LA CLASE is a feminine noun ( even though it doesn;t look it) Clases is plural, so ALL the words of the phrase -- all the words that modify or describe the noun, have to be feminine and plural. Underline all the endings of the words in the noun phrase.
Do the next sentence on your own.
Note that we say the noun before the adjective. because we need to establish whether the noun is singular, plural, masculine or feminine before we can know which ending to put on the adjective, we simply say the noun first and by the time we finish, we will have the correct ending ready to put on the adjective.
review question words -- como, que, de donde, cuantos, add new word --QUIEN (who?)
PRACTICE! ?QUIEN SOY? game
From a description of things that someone does or likes to do or how they are, contestants must guess who they are or what they are like....
1. Soy muy deportista y atletico. Practico futbol americano con el equipo de Denver. Soy de New Orleans. Corro rapidamente y mi numero es dieciocho. Quien soy?
2. Soy artistica y talentosa. Canta la musica Pop y tengo treinta anos. Quien soy?
3. Una persona no habla mucho. No canta o baila. No tiene amigos. Le gusta mucho leer libros y escribir papeles para la clase. Como es?
4. Soy un chico en un film. Corro muy rapidamente. Tengo una hermana muy reservada y timida. Mi padre y madre son muy increibles. Quien soy?
5. Soy un pez famoso. Soy muy prudente y no muy sociable. Tengo una amiga muy sociable que habla mucho pero no es muy inteligente. Quien soy?
TUESDAY OCT 16/Thursday OCT 18
Hand back tests:
PRACTICE LESSON WITH TESTS: Let's add an adjective to some of the nouns on the test -- so, add funny to my grandmom ' my funny grandmom." How about "the impatient grandparents" "the lazy cousins" etc. This way we are reinforcing the idea of adjectives and the little words in front of the nouns ALL AGREEING WITH THE NOUN IN TERMS OF MASCULINE AND FEMININE AND SINGULAR AND PLURAL.
Now we'll add IS and ARE to make a sentence, and say:" My athletic brother is also artistic." See that the second adjective STILL describes 'brother" and so still has to be masculine and singular.
Next: quick quiz over adjectives and nouns : It is a good class and the students are serious and organized. This quiz ended up not counting but gave us a lot of good feedback: Many students were confused right off the bat because they didn't know how to say "it". BIG CONCEPT --- LANGUAGES DO NOT LINE UP WORD FOR WORD. YOU NEVER START AT THE FIRST WORD AND TRY TO TRANSLATE WORD FOR WORD. When I asked "how would you say "she sings"? the lightbulb went on! Remember that in Spanish the verb contains not only the action ( or being) but also the subject!
next: SIMON DICE (Simon says...) break. Learning parts of the body and commands.
Next: some new verbs:
trabajar, estudiar, caminar, comer ( to work, to study, to walk, to eat) all are regular (" take it off"- put endings on)
some new words: these have no other forms - no singular, plural, no feminine masculine, no endings, no changes. they are unchanging.
muy, pero, segun, a veces, tambien, o, pues, si, como ( very, but, acording to, sometimes, also, or, well, yes, how or like/as/since)
Sometimes Ana and I walk in the mountains with my dog.
According to my friends, I am funny and sociable but I am also a very serious student and I study alot.
Does your sister work at a restaurant in Evergreen or Conifer?
What are you eating?
Are your parents working at school today?
Bonus: Can you figure this out based on what you already know?
Who are you eating with today? (hint: think about the question Where are you from?)
FRIDAY OCTOBER 19
choose an activity
Activity: Writing a paragraph
You are being featured in the school's newspaper. Submit a profile of yourself. Include what your family and friends think of you ( according to ......, you are...) Include some things you do and some things you like to do ( use gusta and use endings). Include some specifics such as who you do things with, when and/or where. Use our new vocabulary words, days of the week, seasons, prepositions.
Activity: Write and speak
Include all the above elements and, with a partner, create an interview for the local cable TV show segment about high school students. One partner should create and ask the questions and the other will be the student being interviewed. Extra bonus points if you deviate from the script to get more details on an interesting .
we will continue on Monday.
Monday October 22
Continue working on the paragraphs or interviews from Friday. When you are finished, rewrite the paragraph neatly and turn it in. Interviews do not have to rewrite, but will present the interview to the class -- a few each day.
TUESDAY:
Find the verbs is these sentences. Underline them and then write the Spanish infinitive in parentheses at the end of the sentence. Finally, write the verb in the correct form in Spanish.
My parents are working tomorrow.
Who do you study with?
Are you impatient or patient?
Biology is my favorite subject.
Jenna and Carly are my good friends.
Brenda and I are eating at my house.
My family is skiing at A-Basin on Saturday.
My family and I are not living in Evergreen.
My family and I are funny and sociable.
With this practice exercise, we can see the difference between a verb of being and an action verb with a "helper". remember that English and Spanish --no languages -- will line up word for word. We have, IN ENGLISH, three ways to make a statement in the PRESENT TENSE -- I ski, I am skiing, I do ski. In English to ask a question we have to add helping verbs -- Do you ski? Are you skiing? In Spanish, remember that the verb contains not only the Action ( or being), but also the SUBJECT pronoun and all the helping verbs we use in English.
Show also that is/are as a verb of being acts as an =. There is no object of the verb. The sentence works no matter which side of the verb the subject is on. One side equals the other side.
In the time remaining: A few presentations of interviews or some spontaneous questions and answers
PRACTICE! GO TO THE INTERACTIVE TEXTBOOK AND CHECK OUT THE END OF CHAPTER VOCABULARY REVIEWS; P 70, P 46, P.22,.play some games.
BLOCK DAY October 24/25
* some presentations -- interviews/ some teacher students, some student student, some student/teacher! demonstrate ability to have a spontaneous conversation.
* quiz over ser and adjectives What we learned from this quiz: We are making mistakes we never should make -- for example, when the noun in English has an S on the end, making it PLURAL, that means that the NOUN in Spanish will have an S on the end, making it plural. When the noun in Spanish has an S on the end making it plural, that means that ALL THE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE OR MODIFY THE NOUN will have an s on the end, making them plural -- because In Spanish, the noun dictates the gender and number of all the words that describe or modify it (THE A MY, and all the adjectives.) So..... see an "s"? put all "s"'s on the words!
Also -- pay attention to details -- THE is not the same word as A. MY is not the same as THE either. YOUR is not the same as MY.
NEW ----> Demonstrate and use TPR to introduce encima de, al lado de, debajo de, delante de, detras de, aqui, alli
Donde ( different from De donde, which you already know )
and the verb ESTAR. Forms of estar and the use of ESTAR for location and condition. Perhaps, give the meaning of ESTAR as TO BE LOCATED or TO BE FEELING. Robert IS LOCATED or IS FEELING..... I AM LOCATED, AM FEELING... This way you can't get SER and ESTAR mixed up!
For the forms of ESTAR -- only slightly irregular because there are ACCENTS on 3 of the forms and the I form is weird. Look these up on p.. 107 of your textbook. ( estoy, estas', esta', estamos, estan')
Friday:
Quick review of the ESTAR and prepositions of position! on top of, under, next to, in front of , and behind.
Clarification:
While it is helpful to remember that ESTAR means TO BE LOCATED and TO BE FELLING, in reality, you won;t be thinking that when you go to say something in Spanish -- like "The book is on top of the table." You'll just see the IS. This is the tricky part! You have to think about the whole thought you are expressing and know that you mean the book IS LOCATED....there.
This will take some practice.
* Look at childrens books! Fun!
* Play Lotto and learn some new nouns that we can use later!
