Theatre Arts Discussion and Writing Assignment ( typed, double spaced, MLA, heading) Due December 17
You have seen two plays, written in 1944 and 1947, which won Pulitzer prizes. We have talked about how the surface story is not the whole story and that their award-winning value lies in the ideas, questions, themes that lie beneath the story. You have discussed the underlying stories that are being told in these plays. You have talked about some of the messages and the purpose of the stories, which, in the end, might be a question that we ask ourselves. The questioning and thinking and discussions that we did in this process are tools for you to use to critically respond to art, literature, music, movies and plays that you see from now on.
Here is your essay question:
What is “reality?” Does everyone have their own personal realities, or do others create and contribute to our realities? Is it a combination of both? Using examples from Harvey and A Streetcar Named Desire, compare and contrast how Elwood P. Dowd and Blanche DuBois have constructed their own realities and how they (their realities) are perceived by other characters.
