RESUME NORMAL PROGRAMMING ON MONDAY APRIL 15!
Sentence of the day:
TUESDAY : How do you do a summary, speaking or writing, about the beginning of the movie Finding Nemo, for example? We must use only the vocabulary and structures that we know. Maybe you picked up a key word here or there by listening and watching the spanish audio/ subtitles, but mostly, you are limited. Also, you cannot say the things happened ( a barracuda ATE Coral ) , not until next year. So we have to speak in the present tense. Here is a model for you of how I would make a summary of the movie so far, I can't say everything I would like to, but I can give you enough of the key points of the story's beginning.
Coral and Marlin are living in a new house. It is in an anemone. They are going to have many children, but now the children are in eggs. Marlin and Coral are talking and playing. Coral goes ( leaves) from the anemone and sees a barracuda. she thinks of her eggs and is afraid. When she swims to the eggs, the barracuda, eats Coral and the eggs. Marlin sees one egg that the barracuda does not eat. Now he has one child. The child's name is Nemo.
Some words, I do not know, like anemone and barracuda. Here's how I think about it -- "anemone" is sort of a scientific word, so I assume it will be similar enough to be a cognate. i will guess that it's masculine, though I don't know for sure. Will I be understood by a Spanish- speaker? sure. "Barracuda" sounds Spanish -- I'll guess that it's the same word, feminine "la barracuda".
As we do some of these sentences we can see how we use verbs differently -- ser and estar, for instance. In sentence 2 IT IS IN AN ANEMONE. That translates to "Esta' en un anemone". If I want to say that the house IS an anemone -- I say "ES UN ANEMONE" One says WHERE the house is and the other way tell WHAT the house is.
Same thing with the sentence.... "now the children are in eggs". Compare that to "Now the children are eggs" The first uses ESTAN, the second, SON. The first tells WHERE the children are, the second way tells WHAT the children are.
Next we will want to tell how marlin and coral feel at the beginning -- excited and happy. Then how Marlin feels later-- sad. To tell how someone is feeling, we use ESTAR ( estoy, esta's esta', estamos, esta'n)
Here are some adjectives for you to learn and use:
